2008 NATIONAL MEMBER OF THE YEAR CONNIE SPARKS

Connie Sparks, from Oklahoma, was very pleased and excited to receive the National Member of the Year. Singing in all the concerts the American Kids have performed has really opened her eyes. Singing is the only source of happiness for some people. She has always enjoyed making people happy and loves being the source of their happiness. She will keep singing and continue to have fun making people happy for years to come. God has given her a talent and wants her to use it. God has also given talent to all the other kids in the NEO Kids. They all have helped Connie in performing to her best of her ability. Connie's favorite performance was when the NEO Kids sang to a group of children in a children's shelter for Christmas. Seeing the joy on the faces on the children was the best experience she's ever had. That taught her to never take things for granted. American Kids has taught her a lot of life lessons. Connie would like to say thank you and God bless to all the members and state directors of American Kids and a special thank you to Dr. Dale Smith for starting American Kids.

Hi, my name is John Whisenant I was a member of Arkansas Kids from 1999-2004. I wrote about a year ago to tell you all about coming over to Iraq and now I have been here a year and will be home May 18th.

Since being in Iraq as a Department of Defense Contract Fire Fighter I have had the chance to train the military, and Third World nationals fire safety and much more. Since being here I have help train the military in how to fight vehicle fires, use rescue air bags, use a foam back pack to act as a quick response tool when they are out in the streets.

Also I have responded to various types of emergencies, some of which are normal for a war zone. I have learned a lot about my field of work and about life. Since being in Iraq I have served at Abu Ghraib Prison, Camp Victory in Baghdad Iraq, and Finished my time at Camp Stryker In western Baghdad, Part of the Baghdad International airport. I never though I would get to say I drove on the runways at Baghdad Airport but I have. It hasn’t always been fun over here being away from family and friends and seeing some of the toils of war.

I would have to say growing up in the American Kid organization helped me to develop the skills needed to be in the line of work I am in today and to have served in this position. Thanks and I hope to see everyone at Nationals this year!
